Book News!

While I was off being my crazy self, I had a new book release! I'm hoping that you've already bought it, read it, and loved it, but just in case, my second book, The Lawman's Redemption, came out in July. This is where I put on my shameless promotion hat and ask you to buy the book, post lots of reviews, and encourage other people to buy it!

About the book:
Lawman on a Mission

Former deputy Will Lawson is fighting to regain his reputation—and Mary Stone is his only lead to the bandit who framed him. Now that he's tracked Mary to Leadville, Colorado, Will needs the proud beauty to reveal her past. Instead, his efforts spark a mighty inconvenient attraction…

Mary's only real crime is that she once believed an outlaw's lies. Still, she fears disclosing the truth to Will may land her in jail—and leave her young siblings without protection. Now she must choose between honesty and safeguarding her family. And if Will does clear his own name, can he convince the woman he loves to share it?

Leadville Inspiration for Rocky Mountain Dreams

In my last post, I showed you the cemetery where my husband's family is buried. Today, I wanted to share the inspiration for the location of Rocky Mountain Dreams.

When we go to Leadville, my husband likes to take trips into the hills to see the old mines and check out the scenery. As you'll see from my video, it's beautiful there. But for me, the inspiration is all about the stories of the people who were there before us. History is such a fascinating thing for me. I was never much for just the facts. In high school, we had these quizzes every week where we had to memorize the dates of events. BO-RING. I want to know the stories about the people. Who were they? What were they like? What was important to them? Take a trip with me into the hills above Leadville, and see how those questions led to my book, Rocky Mountain Dreams. I made the video in two parts, one from on top of the hill, and one from the bottom. Enjoy!

And if you haven't gotten my book yet, it's been spotted at Wal-Mart, KMart, Kroger, and is still available online.

Family Inspiration for Rocky Mountain Dreams

9780373282890 The reason I chose to set Rocky Mountain Dreams in Leadville is because we spend a lot of time there. When my husband's family came to the United States, they settled in Leadville. So much of the family history is tied up in the mining history, and that history inspired my story. That's not to say that my books are at all based on the family- they're not. But I can't think of Leadville without thinking of my husband's family.

Yesterday we buried the last of the Leadville generation of our family. My husband's great-aunt Angela passed away last week. She was the daughter of Anton and Mary Novak, the youngest of their eleven children. Spending time with the family yesterday reminded me of a video I made earlier this year when we last went to Leadville. I'm sharing it with you here, and I hope you'll enjoy this tiny peek into the family history that inspired my book!

Winners!! And a name!

I gathered up all of the suggestions for the brothel name and I sent them over to my editor, asking her to choose one. I figured she'd be the best judge of what would work for my book and our readership, and she came up with...

The Pink Petticoat!

Crystal Ridgway, thank you so much for the suggestion. Let me know which online bookstore you'd like a gift card to, and be on the lookout for my second book next spring, featuring The Pink Petticoat.

My other random winner was Holly S.

Thank you everyone for your great ideas and suggestions!

Book news! And a contest!

I finally have a release date for my first Love Inspired Historical book! Look for it November 2014! I also sold my second book, which will be out early to mid 2015.

With all that to celebrate, I wanted to share some of the fun. In my second book, a brothel called The Lucky Miner plays an important role in the story. My editor would like me to change the name to something that doesn't include the word, "Lucky." I thought it would be fun to let my readers help me pick a new name. My book is set in 1881 in Leadville, Colorado, during the silver boom.

I'm going to give you all a week to help me name my brothel. I'll take a look at all of the ideas submitted and choose my favorite brothel name. If two people suggest the same name, I'll go with the one who suggested it first.

The GRAND PRIZE: I'll use your brothel name in my book, you'll be featured in the acknowledgements, AND I'll send you a $25 gift card to the online bookstore of your choice.

And because I want to spread the joy a little, I'm going to give away a random prize to one of our entrants. Just fill out the entry form and rafflecopter will choose a winner to receive a $25 gift card to the online bookstore of their choice.

If you don't see your posts right away, don't worry... it'll be there eventually. Due to high levels of spam, I have to approve everything. Stinky spammers ruin it for everyone!

Fine! I'll talk about my writing!

Where my books are set

I guess since I'm a writer I should talk about my writing. Right now, there isn't anything exciting to talk about. Instead, I'm trying to tell you about the more exciting things in my life. Because seriously, my struggles with paint drying are a lot more exciting than my writing.  My agent has my latest book. He likes it. He'll be submitting it. Maybe he already has. I'm trying not to stalk him and ask for updates every ten seconds.

So I'm working on the next book and pretending that I'm not thinking about the book that somebody might be reading. Right now. Or now. Or maybe it'll be read sometime in the next ten minutes. You never know. And thinking about it only makes me crazy, so I keep busy to avoid thinking about it. Because that makes me think about what I'm currently writing, and I'm still in the "my writing is crap" stage, so let's not think about any of it. Let's pretend everything is good and  pretty and happy, and there will be rainbows and flowers and butterflies.

While I wait, I'll be working on my house, maybe doing something with my garden, possibly getting a few chickens, turning my children into minions, irritating my husband, and, if we can ever get past soccer season, I might even head back to Leadville to do some more research.

Because I really am working on my writing. Really.
