Thursday Thirteen #72: Working out: The good, the bad, and the grotesque

Thirteen Things about Working Out

Yesterday was the annual female exam... got the girl parts checked out, blood taken, other vital organs examined, and the new and improved "you need to exercise and lose weight" lecture. In theory, I agree that I need to work out. In actuality, well, life's a bit more complicated than that.

1. Cost/benefit analysis of exercising more. During kiddo's swimming lesson today, I anted up my $5.50 to work out rather than sit, knit, and make encouraging noises at the pool. Based on the number of lessons kiddo has, this will end up costing me $60 a month. For that price, I'm almost willing to stay fat.

2. I TRY to work out, really, I do. But my children make it rather hard. Last week, while doing my yoga show, small child decided to play under my legs while I was in down dog, tripping me, and causing me to pull a groin muscle that still hurts. I ask, why bother?

3. Getting up earlier in the morning to work out. First, let's pretend that I don't think that the leading cause of psychosis is getting up before sunrise. Second, my children have internal alarms letting them know when I get out of bed. They are wired to not give me a second of alone time.

4. Staying up later to work out. I read somewhere that you shouldn't work out just before you go to bed. Plus, I'm already up until the wee hours working. You know, on things that actually pay the bills.

5. Doing the move more blah blah blah stuff. Actually, I already do that. Park farther away, walk more, etc. So there.

6. Joining a gym. I'll remind you of my cost/benefit analysis. The budget is tight right now, so it'd have to be cheap. And I'm still not sure how I feel about that. I did go to a gym a while back and not only did I not really use it that much, I thought the people were rude, unfriendly and made me feel so self conscious, I really didn't like going. So why would I do that again?

7. Can I just be honest? I don't like exercising. Sweat is gross. Torturing my body has never felt good to me.

8. I should also point out that I only run when chased or am chasing my children. For pleasure? You've got to be kidding.

9. I actually do like hiking and biking. However, if you look out my window, you'll see snow. And frankly, if it's not at least 65 degrees out, I'm staying indoors.

10. Tennis is another fave, except I'm really not that good at it, and it's hard to convince anyone to play with me more than once. Really, that's my issue with any group physical activity. I am sports challenged, and people pay me to not be be on their team.

11. I LOVE yoga. But my doctor says it's not enough of a cardio workout, so I have to do something in addition to it. Phooey.

12. I was in my best shape when I danced regularly. I'm actually a pretty good swing dancer, but gave it up when I got married because despite hubby's athletic prowess, he can't dance to save his life. Just doesn't seem right to go out dancing and leave hubby at home.

13. I am completely aware of all the health benefits of exercising, fully agree with most, if not all of them. I'm just finding that putting into practical use and doing something about it is a bit of a challenge.

I tend to agree with you on most point, but since I'm actually a pretty good tennis player - I don't have the excuse not to play when it's warm. During the winter, I do workouts - but those cost, so they are limited.

Good luck and Happy TT!

I like working out at Curves. For some reason I keep going and stick with exercise when I work out with others. Happy TT!

No. 3 is funny! And I hear ya about staying indoors. I love the outdoors when it's warm, but winder? Puh-leeze! I was born in Georgia during the Dog Days of summer. I do not like cold. Give me sizzle.

We actually bought a ski machine that, after having it repaired twice, sits in our basement collecting dust. Kids and working out do not seem to mix.

Happy TT!

I'm currently in a 'fitness study' at a local gym and kind of like it, but don't think I would do it regularly. The 'fitness study' is really just a way for them to drum up more business and I'm just not interested. I'm pretty consistent in just getting up earlier and cross country skiing in my basement or doing something like that. I've come to the conclusion that it is going to be an ongoing challenge and I'm up to it D*%& It All!!

Hey Danica! Thanks for visiting my blog!

I COMPLETELY agree with your theory of exercise! I have three kids, 5 and under, and I know how that internal alarm clock thing works!

As I'm sure you can relate, I don't get anything done when they're awake, so virtually all my writing is done after they're in bed.
On top of that, my hubby is a HUGE night owl, and he works long hours, so if I want to spend any time with him it's late at night.

So I'm forced to come to a conclusion.

It is impossible to be a homeschooling mom of three, a good wife, an author, and still be thin and have a clean house.

I let the being thin and having a clean house slide. Pick your battles, right?

Danica,
I HEAR you! I have this great Booty Boot Camp thing that's only supposed to take 7 minutes. Trouble is, once I start moving the kiddos think it's time to hang on mommy's leg or jump on her back. LOL
They have the internal alarm too. I tried to wake up early to write. It flopped. Those kids saw the light of my laptop through their closed doors and they came running.
Cute post :-)

See, I'm not alone!!

My friend Kay said we need to do this thing called Nia. I researched it, it looks fun, but well, it's going to end up costing me like $60 a month! Puh-leeze!

#7 is my favorite. I ran track for 4 years in high school. I stopped running the minute I graduated and refuse to torture myself in that way ever again. I think you might like my recent post...

Darn, I am way overdue for a 'girlie' bits exam with the Doc. Thanks for the reminder. And all the best with the exercise. More to the point, hope you actually get to find the energy and time to carry it out. :)
