Lazy Jane

I’ve been wrestling with this topic lately because someone I know is disappointed with things God has not done in her life. Where is God? Why is she still waiting on the promises He’s made?

I looked at her list and I thought… maybe God is waiting on her.

It reminds me of a poem by one of my favorite poets, Shel Silverstein. Lazy Jane wants a drink of water, so rshe lays there and waits it for it to rain. He says it better, but don’t want to infringe on copyright, so look it up.
Sometimes we’re Lazy Jane when it comes to God. We want a drink of water, but instead of doing the obvious, and turning on the faucet, we sit with our mouths open and say, “God! Where are you?” He’s sitting up there saying, “The sink is ten feet in front of you!”

Granted, sometimes, God will put water in our mouths. But a lot of the time, He’s put the water out there and is just waiting for us to get up and get it.
I’ve been guilty of this often enough. “Lord, fix this situation in my life.” Then I sit back and wait for Him to wave His magic wand and make it all better. It’s amazing how many times, when I go ahead and take that first step, He comes alongside me and starts to make things happen.

What have you asked God for? Is there something you can do to take a step in the direction of that thing? Because maybe, it’s not so much that He’s asking you to wait, but He’s pointing at the sink, waiting for you to get up and turn it on.

I'm so glad you posted this! I just came to the same conclusion in my life, and it has made such a difference. Right now, though, I'm dealing with a situation where my husband has to take that first step, and it's driving me crazy. I can't do it for him, and he's dragging his feet. So I'm trying to relax and remember that God will still be faithful to his promises . . . whenever my husband gets around to it.

Your post is so true. I remember a story about my grandfather. He went to my aunt's house in the middle of winter and she wasn't home (if I remember correctly she was at church). The pot belly stove was red hot so he waited for her to get home and gave her 'what for'. She replied "God will take care of my children". His response was "That's what he put you here for." I think sometimes we get too lazy just like LazyJane, He gave us a brain and strength and everything else we need to do some things for ourselves. I really enjoy your posts, I've added you to my blog roll so I'll remember where you are. lol

So glad this helped... it's funny how God ends up taking so many people through the same place at the same time so we can encourage each other.

Sometimes I'm lazy - or just whiney and don't want to take the next step. But sometimes I am just oblivious as to how to help myself. That's one reason we all need friends. Isn't it always easier to see what someone else should do to fix their problems then it is to the cure for your own troubles?

Karen, that's a great point... sometimes it does help to have friends there to guide you. Or, if you're my friend, to give you a shove to get going. Which I'm happy to do for you any time. :)
