Thursday Thirteen #63: Learning to knit

Thirteen Things about learning to Knit

One of my friends, the lovely Camy Tang, is a knitter. Over the past couple of months, I've gotten to spend time with her, and each time, she's amazed me with her skill. And the fact that while the rest of us were bored out of our gourds, she had something to do.

So... I've taken up knitting. Here's what my experience has been like so far:

1. Long tail cast-on... I spent an hour trying to figure it out and just could not get it right. I kept ending up with three loops instead of one. Camy laughed when I called her to tell her that.

2. I went to church, and found myself praying about knitting because I thought it'd be really cool to knit in church. (Is it rude to knit in church? I hope not!)

3. God must've liked that idea, because I came home, picked up the needles and was able to cast-on perfectly on the first try.

4. I think my needles are too big, because I keep getting tangled in them.

5. I also should not have gotten aluminum needles. The stuff keeps falling off. Camy says this happens with aluminum.

6. I really like knittinghelp.com for the information. I've been learning to knit from the videos alone.

7. Both Camy and my friend Allie (who is also a knitting queen) said Continental is easiest. I could not figure out how to get the stitch right until I saw this website.

8. I've been told knitting is a good stress reliever. I'm finding it semi-true... I like it when I'm in sync, but when I mess up, I get stressed.

9. I also think knitting will be a great way to make me more menacing... don't mess with me because I've got a pointy thing. HA!

10. One of my plans for knitting is that I'm going to use it as a prayer tool... as I knit a stitch, I'll be praying for something different. So far, it's pretty cool.

11. My kids are really excited that I'm knitting. Once I get the hang of it, I'm going to make it a mother/daughter thing.

12. Here is what I've done so far. Totally crappy, but totally mine. Love it!

13. Despite my progress, I still have not figured out how to untangle my yarn.

I think it might have once been common for women to knit or crochet during church. I think its how they stayed away while the husbands slept through the sermon.

Don't you hate it when the guts come out of the skein? My dd is having all kinds of problems with it. I keep telling her not to pull so hard, but she doesn't listhen.

Hey there -- pretty impressive stitching going on there, Dream.

I like crocheting, too ... I think it's way easier than knitting. Needle is less dangerous, too ;)

Chuckling at the sleeping through sermons post :)

I was never coordinated enough to learn to knit, so I relax by sewing instead. Too bad I can't take my sewing machine to church!

Good luck and Happy TT!

I crochet...tried to learn to knit and got to the step of casting on...simple. Then, the next step - making a purl...oh there is where I stopped. Crocheting is easier. LOLOLOL

Good luck.

[ps love the yarn ball photo!]

Come on over to my place and read about the Headless Horseman and Icabod Crane from the legendary short story...it's loaded with pictures and some historical facts today. See you there!!

Happy Thursday 13.

I love knitting! (Although it's been several months since I've picked up my needles.)
I learned how to as a child, then forgot. When I wanted to pick it up again, the how to books didn't make sense for the cast-on. I called my mom, and she taught me over the phone. (Evidence I'm an auditory learner?)
I love the yarn more than knitting, I think. I could spend hours at Hobby Lobby rubbing the yarns across my cheek (facial, that is).
My mom tried to teach me to crochet. Too many things were thrown. So I went back to knitting.

Great list! I'm learning, too. I got to try a friend's bamboo needles, and they are THE best!
I can't figure out knitting in the round. I want to make babyleggs without the seam but I am too afraid to try knitting with 3 double sided needles.

that website helped me immensily when I learned how to knit a few years ago. To keep your yarn untangled, wind it into a ball before you start knitting. Your kids can help with that! There is also a 'knitting for dummies' book that I found helpful. And I found a prayer a stitch too short, I use rows, instead...
great TT

Danica, I'm a basic knitter. I do great rows--and that's about all. Scarves, scarves, and more scarves. Luckily I live where we need scarves, scarves, and more scarves.

I love your project. It really is wonderful. I'm teaching my daughter to knit, so I understand what you're going through. But at some point, it'll all fall into place and you'll be churning out scarves and a hat or two, and who knows? Maybe a multicolored lacy yet cabled sweater knit on tiny needles with threadlike yarn (that's my knitting nightmare).

Keep us up to date!

I taught myself to knit when my third child was a couple of weeks old and for quite a while I was totally obsessed with it. Think it's what kept me sane. Your knitting is delightful and so are your efforts at learning the craft. And you're right, it is all yours! :)

I taught myself to knit a few years ago - you are way ahead of me when I was learning. I got the cast on thing figured out, but it took me EIGHT hours to figure out how to do a knit stitch. I didn't realize the knitted piece passes from needle to needle :)

Now I do fair Isle, I love bamboo needles, double points. Hate huge projects like blankets. Mittens and stuffed animals are my faves. I'm gonna post a pic of the mittens I finished today.

Knitting help is where I learned a lot. there's a store on Colfax and Pierce called Showers of Flowers. It's the worlds largest yarn shop and those ladies helped me every time I got stuck and ran to them for help.

Ahhh... so many knitting friends. My kiddos are fascinated with it, so I bought them some kid needles today along with some bamboo ones for me. LOVE the bamboo needles.

And thanks for all the tips! I never knew it was called guts in the skein. Love it!
