Thursday Thirteen #30: Thirteen things that happened thirty years ago

Thirteen Things about being in your thirties

Since this is #30 for me, it marks a bit of a milestone, and I thought I'd celebrate by celebrating things that happened thirty years ago.

1. Jimmy Carter was President. Walter (who?) Mondale was Vice President.
2. Median household income was $17,000 (YIKES!)
3. A stamp was 15 cents. (Is it my imagination or has inflation on stamps risen more than our income?)
4. A gallon of gas cost 63 cents (again... anyone care to do the math on the inflation of income versus gas)
5. The Camp David Peace Treaty marked peace between Egypt and Israel. (Peace? Really?)
6. Jim Jones and his followers at Jonestown committed suicide.
7. World population 4.4 billion.
8. First test tube baby is born.
9. The first computer bulletin board system is created.
10. The average house cost $54,800 (don't I wish!)
11. Sweden is the first nation to ban aerosol sprays due to the damage they cause to the ozone layer.
12. China lifts a ban on works by Aristotle, Shakespeare, and Dickens.
13. My little brother was born.

It wasn't called episode IV then, was it? Just Star Wars.

Okay here's the really scary thing. thirty years ago I was already 18! I remember all of these things clearly. I even handed out pamphlets for Jimmy Carter.

Hi, cool list!! Is aerosol still used? If not, what's in canned air? I'm overly sensative to that stuff!! I did a TT list too, it's here: http://lifes-adventures.net
Cheers!!

The one that got me was the Jamestown Koolaid suicide thing. I can't believe it's been 30 years. Very interesting perspective Danica.

It will be a couple more years before my baby brother turns 30. Happy TT.

Kinda sick how well I remember that stuff. Even the Egypt/Israel treaty which is something a kid wouldn't typically care about.

Great idea for a list!

Oh, cool idea for a TT! I remember all that (well, except for your little brother being born! LOL)...I can even remember when stamps were 10 cents! It's crazy how much things go up in price!

Happy TT

I remember most of these things fairly clearly but not all of them. Thanks for the fun list.

I remember the Jim Jones thing, and how stunned everyone was with disbelief.

Glad you all enjoyed the list. Interesting stuff, history. Wow. Can you believe we're calling it history already?

Oh, and Heather, I changed one of the entries because I realized Star Wars was 77 not 78.
